Hello, my name is Carol and I volunteer at Brooks Cafe in Patchway. I've been here a good ten years now. I started just after the cafe opened - and I might have even been the first volunteer!
I do a bit of everything really - except cooking. I serve at the counter, take money, clear tables and help out with tidying the dishes if they're busy in the kitchen.
When I retired, I stayed home for two years and got really bored. I was looking for something local to do - and this turned up! I've not got a lot of hobbies, so this gets me out, meeting people and keeps me fit!
I now help help new volunteers get used to our routine and love talking with customers, serving them good food. If you're thinking of volunteering - I'd say just do it!
Hello, my name is Mike and I volunteer at the café at Coniston Community Centre. I’ve only been doing this for about eighteen months.
My wife volunteers here so it’s nice to do this with her. I wash up, put everything away and clear tables.
It’s nice volunteering in the café. I like meeting different people. I just enjoy it – it gives me something to do. I got shown how to do everything when I started, so I just get on with it now.
If you’re thinking of volunteering with Southern Brooks, I’d say come along. Its been good for me. You can do what suits you.
