After Diagnosis – A To Do List

Receiving a diagnosis of Dementia can be a worrying time, and you may not know what you need to put in place, so we have created this handy list for you to consider:

Legal

 Finances

  • Attendance allowance: Attendance Allowance helps with extra costs for people who have a disability severe enough that they need someone to help look after them. If you need help with applying, you can contact Citizen’s Advice. https://www.gov.uk/attendance-allowance
  • Council tax discount: A person with dementia may be disregarded for paying council tax. You will probably need a certificate from your GP or consultant in order to apply. You then apply to your local council. Citizens Advice can help you: Citizens Advice South Gloucestershire (southgloscab.org.uk)

Medical and safety

 Utilities

  • Registration with SSE: If you are a vulnerable person, SSE can make sure you have the support you need, when you need it. Their service offers: A dedicated 24 hour priority services phone number and priority updates during a power cut.  https://www.ssen.co.uk/PriorityServices/
  • Registration with British Gas: You can register if you or someone in your household is of pensionable age, disabled, or has a long term illness. Your Network Operator will get in touch if your energy supply is going to be interrupted. They’ll help you figure out what to do to stay safe.
